Features of new Constitution outlined in Parliament

The government presented its vision for the new Constitution in Parliament on Saturday.

Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe outlined some key features of the new Constitution, which include abolishing the Executive Presidency, electoral reforms, strengthening democratic rights, and a constitutional response to the ‘national question’.

European Delegation scheduled to visit Sri Lanka next week

Top EU officials, including members of the European Commission and European External Commission Service, will be in Sri Lanka from the 19th to 22nd of January.

Among significant matters to be discussed are the chances of reintroducing the GSP+ concession.

Norwegian government to provide support to resettled communities

An agreement has been reached between the Country Director of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Norwegian Ambassador to Sri Lanka to organise the support of the Norwegian government to resettled communities in Sri Lanka.

Access to justice and livelihood support mechanisms are areas which the UNDP and Norwegian government seek to improve.

Chinese shares drop further

The Chinese share market had a low start to the week with a further 5% fall, showing no improvements from last week’s volatility.

Global markets faced an economic shock after the Chinese share market collapsed twice last week.

United Nations to send aid to besieged Syrian village

The previously delayed United Nations convoy with essential aid is set to leave to Madaya, the Syrian village besieged by government forces.

Residents of Madaya, including children, are reportedly starving to death after running out of food and medical supplies.

Social security agreement between India and Australia comes to fruition

A pact providing retirement support to citizens of India and Australia residing in one another’s countries, has entered into force.

It is believed that the agreement will enhance enhance bilateral commercial ties.
