Hon. Salma Ataullahjan, Senator of the Canadian Parliament, and Ms. Yasmin Ratansi, Member for Parliament in Canada, addressed a Foreign Policy Round Table at LKI on 9 November 2017 where they spoke on “The Role of the Commonwealth in the New World Order.”

The presentation from the Canadian Parliamentarians highlighted the discrepancies in gender equality amongst Commonwealth states, the necessity of further youth engagement on a broad range of issues, as well as the importance of Commonwealth states maintaining strong values and standing up to injustice, aiding developing countries to stabilise governance systems and uphold the rule of law.

The Round Table discussion that followed then revolved around the Sustainable Development Goals, common law in the Commonwealth, and the significance of the Commonwealth to the new world order.

The round table was attended by the High Commissioners of Canada and Bangladesh, the Counsellor of the High Commission of Canada, representatives from the Australian, British and South African High Commissions, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, LKI’s Board of Management, representatives from nonprofits and think tanks.

The round table was moderated by Dr. Ganeshan Wignaraja, the Chair of the Global Economy Programme at LKI.
