Parliament to convene as a Constitutional Assembly for the first time

The Parliament will convene as a Constitutional Assembly for the first time on 5th April. The first sitting will consist of all Members of Parliament, who will appoint subcommittee members to handle the constitution-building process.

The Constitutional Assembly was appointed for the purpose of deliberating and seeking the views and advice of the people on a new Constitution for Sri Lanka, and preparing a draft of a Constitution Bill for Parliament to consider.

Sri Lankan delegation holds key meetings in Switzerland

A Sri Lankan delegation consisting of senior government officials and private sector representatives, engaged in key meetings at the WEF (World Economic Forum) headquarters in Geneva.

The delegation met with the WEF Chairman, Professor Klaus Schwab,  and other representatives from international organisations, to discuss areas of engagement between Sri Lanka and the WEF foundation. 

Missing persons commission begins public sittings in Mullaitivu

The Presidential Commission investigating missing persons complaints has commenced public sittings in Mallaitivu.

The Secretary to the Commission, Hewa Wasalage Gunadasa, stated that the Commission has invited 1,600 people to provide oral statements regarding reported cases of their missing family members during the war.

 

INTERNATIONAL NEWS

Suicide attack in Lahore

A suicide bomb blast in Lahore, Pakistan, killed at least 69 people and wounded over 300, in a crowded public park. Many of the victims were women and children.

Jamaat-e-Ahrar, which is a splinter faction of the Taliban, has claimed responsibility for this attack.

Japan opens radar station in the East China sea

Japan has switched on a new radar system on the island of Yonaguni in the East China sea, giving it a permanent intelligence gathering post.

Yonaguni is located close to Taiwan, just 150 km south of the disputed Senkaku islands

Syrian troops recapture Palmyra

The Syrian government troops have recaptured the historic city of Palmyra from the Islamic State, with the help of Russian air support.

The recapturing of the city, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is widely regarded as a landmark victory in the fight against the Islamic State.
